Desensitizers Influence the Bond Strength of a Three-step Etch-and-rinse Bonding-system
Objectives: To evaluate the influence of five desensitizers on the bond strength of the adhesive system OptiBond FL on bovine dentin Methods: 240 specimens were prepared by two operators (120 each). Bovine teeth were ground with a Metaserv grinder/polisher until an adequate dentin surface was exposed. The total of 240 specimens was divided into six groups each having 40 samples per desensitizer-group and one control-group (KG) without the use of a desensitizer. The five desensitizers Dentin-Versieglungsliquid (DV), GLUMA Desensitizer (GD), VivaSens (VS), TEETHMATE DESENSITIZER (TD) and smartprotect Desensitizer (SD) were applied according to the manufacturers instructions. Thereafter composite cylinders (CeramX M5) were fixed with the adhesive system Optibond FL perpendicular to the exposed dentin surfaces. The samples were stored in a hygrophor at 37°C for 24 hours before testing. Thereafter the specimens were stabilized in gypsum and tested with an universal testing-machine (Zwick). Data were analysed by ANOVA followed by post-hoc Newman-Keuls test analysis. Results: A rank order of shear bond strength was established based on mean values: TD 22.38 MPa > DV 20.2 MPa > VS 20.19 MPa > KG 20.14 MPa > SD 17.6 MPa > GD 15.8 MPa. GD and SD showed significantly lower values comared to KG, whereas VS, DV and TD were not significantly different from KG. No operator influence was detected. Conclusions: GD and SD significantly reduced the bond strength of the three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system OptiBond FL on bovine dentin. This effect might be related to glutaraldehyde which is contained in GD and SD but not in the other desensitizers tested.
