MIH Survey Among Youths in the City of Ashkelon, Israel

Objectives: The term MIH (Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation) was first introduced in 2001 by Weerheijm to describe developmental defined quality defects of enamel, affecting one or more permanent molars, with or without the involvement of permanent incisors.
Due to overlapping times of second primary molar mineralization with the first permanent molar and incisor, diagnosis of MIH-like lesions of second primary molar (SPM) that affects one to four second primary molar are up to 9%. These lesions were called hypomineralised second primary molar (HSPM).
To date no epidemiological survey was conducted of the prevalence of MIH / HSPM among children and youth population in Israel.
the aim is to conducte a preliminary survey among children and adolescents of the city of Ashkelon on the prevalence of MIH / HSPM lesions.
Methods: 822 adolescents aged 12-16 attending school in the city of Ashkelon in southern Israel were checked to detect the presence of MIH lesions. The results were analyzed according to the guidelines of the EAPD 2014.Detected lesions were diagnosed according to clinical condition and size of the lesion.
Results: : 413 of total participants were male (51%) and 409 were girls (49%).
Total teenagers found with a lesion in the teeth were 177' which are 21.5%. The number of these young people were defined as having MIH / HSPM are 138 representing 77% of all children with dental lesions, and 17% of children surveyed
Conclusions: MIH defects affect the daily life of the child both from a health stand of point and in terms of overall quality of life. The treatment is often challenging both to the patient and to the therapist. These teeth cam be sensitive to heat / cold. They tend to have an enamel breakdown and to develop advanced caries lesions. They require significant restorative care and repeated treatments. Works of oral health factors indicate an increase from the clinical effect of MIH and an expensive burden for public health.
