Method: 53 patients with age ranging between 18-55 years were participated in this study. 120 Class V carious were prepared and restored using the tested adhesives under self etch or total etch modes. The adhesives were Futurabond Universal (Voco) and Scotchbond universal (3M-Espe). Composite resin Grandio SO and Z350 (3M) was used. Thirty restorations were made for each test group. A Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal surface of each tooth. with comparable size; 3-4 mm occlusogingivally, 2-3 mm mesiodistally and 1 mm deep in dentin. Finishing and polishing was accomplished using contouring diamond points, rubber points and flexible discs. Each restoration was clinically evaluated after finishing and polishing, after one year in accordance with the (USPHS) criteria
Result: After one year, 48 patients were available for recall and 114 restorations were evaluated (recall rate of 95 %). For Futurabond U, No loss of restorations was reported under the two test modes. Under self etch mode: all restorations showed alpha rating for all tested criteria. Under total etch mode, all restorations showed alpha rating for color match and anatomic form, however one restoration showed slight marginal stain and the same restoration exhibited minor marginal discrepancy
For 3M universal adhesive: Under SE mode, one restoration was lost after one year. One restoration showed Bravo rating for anatomic form and another restoration showed bravo rating for marginal adaptation. For total etch mode one restoration exhibited bravo score for anatomic form and two restorations showed bravo rating for marginal discoloration. There was no statistically significant difference between the tested adhesives after two years (p > 0.05)
Conclusion: both tested adhesives showed excellent clinical performance after one year.
