Orbital Abscess as a Rare Complication of Root Canal Treatment

Objective: To present a case of an orbital abscess as a complication of root canal treatment and outline recommendations for investigation, medical and surgical treatments for orbital cellulitis and associated abscesses.

Method: Literature search and review of relevant articles using keywords; orbital cellulitis, orbital abscess, endodontics.

Result: An outline of current recommendations for investigation, medical treatment and surgical options for orbital cellulitis and associated abscesses is presented.

Conclusion: This case highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and prompt referral to prevent the progression of a potentially sight and life threatening condition when left untreated. A review of the literature outlines current recommendations for investigation, medical treatment and surgical options for orbital cellulitis and associated abscesses.
