Shear Bond Strength Evaluation of a New Experimental Universal Adhesive

Objective:

Universal application technique and universal application on different surfaces is the current trend in adhesives. This study investigated the shear bond strength (SBS) of two current universal adhesives (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, SUA, 3M/Espe; All-Bond Universal, ABU, Bisco) compared with an experimental universal adhesive  (EXPA) from Heraeus Kulzer.

Method:

Adhesives were applied according their instruction for use in a self-etch or etch&rinse mode on human dentine and enamel (n=8 for each group).

Additionally, the adhesives were used in self-etch mode on precious (BioMaingold SG), non-precious (Heraenium CE) and zirconia specimens (all Heraeus Kulzer). Non-tooth specimens (n=5/group) were sandblasted with 50µm jetting alumina and 1.5 bar pressure before adhesive application. Venus Diamond composite, shade A2, was bulk filled in cylindrical plastic molds (Ultradent equipment) and cured for 20s. Both, adhesive and composite were cured separately using a LED LCU (Translux Power Blue, Heraeus Kulzer). Shear bond strength was measured according ISO 29022 (Ultradent method) after 24 hours water storage at 37°C. Non-tooth-specimens were additionally thermo cycled (5000 cycles, 5-55°C/10s dwell time) The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and LSD post-hoc tests (p<0.05) for the comparison of the adhesives. Statistics between application modes within each adhesive group were done using independent t-tests (p<0.05).
