Delivered Irradiance as a function of LCU-Tip to Restoration Surface

Objectives: To quantify the delivered irradiance as a function of distance of the light curing unit (LCU) tip from the restoration surface and different LCUs. Methods: Six LCUs, bluephase-20i, bluephase-G2, bluephase-style (Ivoclar-Vivadent); freelight2, EliparS10 (3MESPE); VALO (Ultradent), were individually mounted on a MARC - Resin Calibrator™ and centred perpendicularly over the sensor. The distance between the LCU tip and the sensor was increased from 0.00mm initially in 1.00mm increments up to a distance of 10.00mm. At each distance, the LCU was activated for 10 seconds and the energy per unit area (mW/cm2) delivered to the sensor recorded. Results: Table1. Irradiance of all six LCUs decreased as a function of distance. bluephase G2 had the least variance over distance (0.00 to 10.00mm). 3M ESPE LCUs showed a wide divergent beam with a 73-82% loss in irradiance over 10mm, similar to the bluephase20i with turbo tip. Conclusions: Reporting a single irradiance value or a single energy spectral range to describe the output from a curing light is both imprecise and inappropriate. LCU manufacturers should indicate irradiance values delivered at different clinically relevant T-S distances. Information of both the irradiance distribution, and the distribution of the spectral emission across the light tip should be provided. Recommendations for curing times for different clinical T-S distances should be given by manufacturers of RBCs.
