Implementation of Quality Assurance Productivity Tools: Basis For Improvements

Objectives: Assessing implementation of quality assurance productivity tools(QAPT) among seven accredited dental schools in the Philippines and proposing improvements based on the five areas of Total Quality Management (TQM) as follows: 1) employee participation and reward system;  2) management leadership and commitment; 3) quality planning;  4) supplier involvement; and, 5) customer orientation.

Methods: The study was conducted among 99 respondents using descriptive method to assess implementation of QAPT from 2012-2013.  The researcher-made questionnaire focused on extent of use, effectiveness of quality assurance productivity tools and problems encountered along the five areas of TQM.

Result: Findings revealed high mean values for 5S/7S(3.64),quality circle(3.61) indicating large extent of use.There were high mean values for 5S/7S(3.90), suggestion scheme (3.79), quality circle (3.70), morale survey (3.58),customer feedback (3.56),benchmarking (3.56) indicating large effectiveness.Likewise high values were obtained on problems encountered based on forming a quality circle(3.41),engaging the top management in quality actions (3.44),setting quality related goals(3.37),forming partnerships with suppliers (3.33),determining the customer’s future needs and expectations (3.38).

Conclusion: The most used and most effective quality assurance productivity tool is the 5S/7S.Areas for improvement were:1)forming a quality circle; 2) engaging top management in quality actions; 3)forming partnerships with suppliers;4) setting quality related goals; and, 5)determining customer’s needs and expectations.
