Oral Health Impact Profile in Cidade de Deus, RJ, Brazil

Cidade de Deus is one of the highest slams of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The difficulty of access to dental treatment could increase oral health problems.

Objective: The objective of this investigation was to evaluate own oral health perception levels by children and adults.

Method: The experimental methods included the measurement instrument’s questionnaire: Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP 14). DMF-T and dmf-t index values according to WHO criteria were analysed by all participants. A cross-sectional study with 615 probes was carried out in 5 to 44 years old individuals divided  by age groups after Ethical Committee aproval and individdual or parents‘ authorisation. X2 test was used hereto.

Result: Essential results including appropriate data showed that the highest life quality and own oral health perception were mainly found at the ages of 20 till 44 years. Correlation between higher self oral health perception and high DMF-T scores was found in age groups of 15 to 19 and 20 to 44. Young children had lower oral health impact perception in life and lower dmf-t index values. Perception increased with age as well as DMF-T values. Psychological disconfort dimension presented the highest life impact. Lower impact and self perception of oral health procedures increased with age, the same for the increase of caries in this population.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that oral health strategies should be implementing throughout individuals‘ lifes to allow this deprived population achieve better oral health standards and better quality of life.
