Optical Properties Of Current Ceramic Systems For Laminate Veneers

Objectives:

Objectives:Full-ceramic systems can be produced by different techniques (layering, heat-pressing, CAD/CAM) and have various compositions which may affect the optical properties of laminate restorations. It is necessary to select the best shade and reproduce this shade with the best material.

Methods:

Methods:84 specimens were prepared from e.maxPress; e.maxCAD; EmpressEsthetic; emaxCeram; Inline; ZirPress  (A1 shade; diameter 10mm; thickness 0.5±0.05mm). Color measurements were performed for the shade guide (Chromascop, Ivoclar) and full-ceramics with a colorimeter according to the (CIE) L*a*b* system. L*, a*, b* values, Chroma and Translucency (TP) of each system were recorded before and after UV ageing for 300 hours. Statically analyses were performed.

Results:

Results: L* value of the shade guide was significantly different with full-ceramic systems; however there were no significant difference between the a* values of Ceram, Esthetic, Inline and Zirpress. There were significant difference between the b* value of the shade guide with full-ceramics except e.maxPress. e.max Press system showed the highest L* and b* values (L*=90.9,b*=9.8); while Esthetic showed the least(L*=86.24,b*=5.48). Esthetic showed the highest a* value (-0.08) and e.maxCAD showed the least (-1,74). L* values decreased, a* and b* values increase after ageing process for all groups.  The DE values vary between 1.39-1.83 and there were no significant differences between the DE values of ceramic systems (p>0.05).  TP values decreased, Chroma value increased significantly after ageing (p>0.05). Chroma of the shade guide was found the highest. Esthetic was most (20.89) and e.maxCAD was least translucent (15.82) ceramic system.

Conclusions:

Conclusions: Color parameters of ceramic systems don’t match the shade guide. L*, a*, b* values vary significantly between the full-ceramic systems. Different construction techniques don’t affect the color values with the same chemical structure. Ageing causes full-ceramics to get darker, more opaque, reddish and yellowish.
