PVP-Taurine-Zincgluconate Gel, Spray and Mouthwash Efficacy in Oral-Lesions Treatment

Objectives: test the efficacy of a PVP, taurine and zinc gluconate gel, spray, and mouthwash in reducing pain and healing time of aphthosus lesions.

Methods: a sample of 80 patients, consecutively treated for recurrent minor oral ulcers and blind regarding study aims, was split in four groups of 20 using a stratified randomization list, which considered as main prognostic factor the presence of a systemic pathology responsible for the ulcers onset: group A was treated with the PVP, taurine and zinc gluconate gel; group B was treated with the PVP, taurine and zinc gluconate spray; group C was treated with the PVP, taurine and zinc gluconate mouthrinse; group D was used as control group and no treatment was administered (t0). After traumatic factor removal, if present, every patient daily registered on a VAS scale for 1 week his pain intensity and was evaluated after three days (t1) and after one week (t2) by a third operator, blind regarding to the study aim, that registered the presence of discolorations or side-effects,  lesions dimension and painfulness following the sprinkle with a sterile saline solution.

Results: statistical analysis was performed. Group A had a mean VAS value 1.85 points lower and an healing process 2.04 days on average faster than control group D; group B had a mean VAS value 1.94 points lower and an healing process 1.70 days on average faster than control group D; group C had a mean VAS value 1.69 points lower and an healing process 1.87 days on average faster than control group D. There were no side effects or teeth discoloration.

Conclusions: all these products were effective on pain reduction and healing fastening of oral ulcers and lesions, after traumatic agent removal. The absence of side effects contributed to the optimal patient's compliance to the assigned therapy.
