Methods: A total of 221 patients were recruited when attended to the Implant Assessment Clinic. Treatment need categories were hypodontia, trauma, unsatisfactory complete and partial denture cases. The OHIP-14, which assesses the adverse impact of oral conditions on quality of life and GHQ, a measure of global distress, were subsequently completed by the patients. Subsequently, unpaired Student t-test was used to explore the association between OHIP-14 and GHQ scores for different categories of restorative treatment needs.
Results: Statistical analyses showed that there were significant differences between hypodontia and removable partial denture cases (p < 0.001); between hypodontia and complete denture cases (p < 0.05) and between trauma and removable partial denture cases (p < 0.01) for GHQ socres. Regarding OHIP-14 scores, there were highly significant differences between hypodontia and removable partial denture cases (p < 0.0001); between hypodontia and complete denture cases (p < 0.001); between trauma and removable partial denture cases (p < 0.0001) and between trauma and complete denture cases (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Patients with complete dentures and removable partial dentures who are seeking dental implants scored significantly high for OHIP-14 and GHQ when compared to hypodontia and trauma cases.
