Effect of Duraphat on enamel demineralization after fixed orthodontic treatment

Objectives:To evaluate the efficacy of 2.26%fluoride varnish (Duraphat) applications on enamel remineralization (white spot lesions, WSLs).Methods:The study design was a random, single-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.110 orthodontic patients with labial (buccal) enamel surface demineralization were recruited. Samples were randomly assigned to a test group or a placebo group with topical application of either Duraphat or a placebo every month after orthodontic treatment during the first 6 months. WSLs were recorded by DIAGNOdentpen. The outcome measures were scored at 3rd month and 6th month. Results:There were no significant differences in the DIAGNOdentpen values of WSL between the test group and the placebo group at baseline. DIAGNOdentpen values significantly decreased in the test group compared to the placebo group at 3rd month (P<0.05), 5.52 and 1.34 lower than baseline, respectively. Values significantly decreased in the test group compared to the placebo group at 6th month(P<0.01), 7.12 and 1.41 lower than baseline respectively. Statistically significant differences were found at baseline, 3rd month, and 6th month (P<0.01) in the test group. In the placebo group, scores at 3rd month or 6th month were significantly different from that at baseline (P<0.01), but no statistically significant differences were detected between 3rd month and 6th month. Conclusions:The effect of 2.26% fluoride varnish (Duraphat) application on enamel remineralization after orthodontic treatment during the first 6 months was remarkable. Duraphat could be applied on enamel demineralization after orthodontic treatment against further deterioration.
