Self-medication prevalence among dental patients in urban area of Pakistan

Objectives: It has been commonly observed that prevalence of self medication among dental patients in developing countries has been increased but there is dearth of information about its modality. Therefore, this study was designed to determine the proportion of dental patients in urban area of Pakistan who practiced self medication and then used the prescribed medicine with short span of time. Methods: This pilot study was conducted at Department of Dentistry, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, Pakistan. One Hundred consenting respondents were selected by multistage sampling technique and interviewed with the aid of semi structured questionnaire. Results: Almost more than half of the respondents (52%) admitted to self medication while 48% used the prescribed medicine. Drugs utilized are usually in combination, commonly both analgesics (75%) and antibiotics (86%), and 20% used the prescribed medication within one week time span of self medication. The reasons cited by respondents for self medication were their perception that they know what to do, it saves time and money, in addition, non-professionals advised them to use these medicines. Conclusion: A sizable majority of the respondents admitted to self-medication usually with antibiotics and analgesics. Health education of the public on the use and misuse of medicines needs to be addressed and the availability of antibiotics over the counter should be restricted.
