Introduction:

Regular use of tobacco in different ,smoke and smokeless forms, produces significant ill effects on soft and hard tissues in oral and perioral areas.Aims & Objectives:The aim of the poster is to provoke awareness amongst the people living in different communities regarding the ill effects of tobacco and prevalence of different oral and perioral pathologies due to its use.

Methods: & Materials:

We conducted a survey at LM&DC in Feb 2011, among dental students of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Final Year, (18-24 years of age) concerning the consumption of tobacco. To serve the purpose, we distributed a self-generated questionnaire among the dental students which depicted the prevalence of smoking among the people due to different causes and also provided information about the frequency of consumption of toacco . Associated diagrams also suggest the oral conditions of people who consume both smoke and smokeless tobacco. Interventions and different management options are also illustrated.

Results:

Total 200 students participated in survey. 110 students smoked due to different causes. 90 did not smoke. Out of 110 who smoked, 42% due to peer pressure, 14% due to advertisement, 8% due to familial causes, 36% due to Other reasons.

Conclusion:

This poster correlates consumption of tobacco with a vast range of precancerous, nonmalignant and malignant changes in the oral and perioral environment. Oral conditions less definitively linked to consumption of tobacco are also discussed. We conclude that consumption of tobacco leads to the prevalence of certain oral conditions adversely affecting healthy lifestyle.
