Evaluation Of clinical Effects of toothpowder On Plaque-Induced Gingivitis

Objective: To compare the antiplaque and antigingivitis effectiveness of Toothpowder and Toothpaste Introduction: Controlling dental plaque may play a key role in maintaining oral health. It is generally accepted that oral hygiene maintenance through regular removal of dental plaque and food deposits is an essential factor in the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease. Use of dentifrices are important in plaque control and oral hygeine mainatnce. Toothpowder and toothpastes are products with a long and successful history of controlling plaque and gingivitis. Material & Method: The present study was a six month randomized single blind paralled arm controlled clinical trial. That compared the efficacy of tooth powder with toothpaste in controlling dental plaque. The study involved 150 subjects with gingivitis, randomly assigned to the test (Toothpowder) or control (Toothpaste) group. Subjects were examined at baseline for gingivitis and plaque by using Gingival index (GI) of Löe & Silness as modified by Talbott et al and Turesky modification of the Quigley-Hein Index respetively. Then all subjects received non surgical therapy (Root Planning and Curettage). Subjects in both groups were subjected to oral examination through out the period of study after 1, 3 and 6 months and kept on using tooth powder and toothpaste. Results: The PI and GI scores of the tooth powder group were statistically higher than those of the toothpaste group (P<0.05) Conclusion: The results of this study showed that toothpowder is an effective means to control plaque and gingivitis.
