Effect of Glycemic Control On Periodontal Status of Urban Population

Abstract

Objective: Diabetes mellitus is a progressing global health concern and its high prevalence and incidence pose a great burden on a disadvantaged and socially marginalized population. The objective of this study was to assess the association between metabolic control and the periodontal status of an urban population with poor oral hygiene. Material and Methods: Individuals with controlled diabetes141 and with uncontrolled diabetic 143 individuals were recruited from the dental clinic. The group with uncontrolled diabetes includes 56 males and 88 females, and the controlled diabetic group includes 49 males and 92 females. All underwent clinical examination and grades on the plaque index, gingival index, periodontal index and calculus index were recorded. Results: Periodontal index, gingival index, plaque index and calculus index showed the significant differences in both the groups (p-value 0.016, 0.000, 0.004, 0.056 respectively). The mean number of teeth present in both the groups was 22. Most of the subjects clean their teeth once daily with the help of tooth brush while the patients brushing twice daily are 16%. Conclusion: Uncontrolled hyperglycemia had significantly severed impact on periodontal status in our disadvantaged population with poor oral hygiene; diabetic patients have more number of missing teeth, and more plaque.
