Impact of choline based ionic liquid on antifungal properties of silicone denture base soft liners

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a novel, antifungal ionic liquid incorporated denture base soft liner, that met the standard criteria of material compliance.
Methods: Choline salicylate ionic liquid (IL) was synthesized and characterized for surface and purity analysis with FTIR and NMR. Prepared IL was blended with silicone liners (Moloplast B; DETAX) in 1%, 2%, and 5% concentrations to constitute the experimental subgroups; CS1, CS2, and CS5. Conventional and antifungal drug itraconazole(5%), incorporated liners served as control. The antifungal activity was determined using disc samples(10x2), placed on agar plates inoculated with C. Albicans (2.8 × 106 CFU/ml). Compliance was carried out with Shore A hardness, evaluated at the baseline, 2 and 7 days, using 70× 50x 6mm thick rectangular specimens, immersed in distilled water at 37oC. Water absorption was determined by weight changes of the disc-shaped samples with 30x2 dimensions, using an analytical balance on days 3 and 7.
Results: Sigma Stat software was used to statistically process the data, and all pairwise multiple comparisons were done with post hoc analysis of Tukey's test with α= 0.05 (p 0.001).
An IL-incorporated liner inhibited C.albicans in material suspension and on the material surface in a dose-dependent manner, followed by a positive control with an antifungal drug. The hardness of the IL-incorporated groups increased. IL-incorporated groups increased with time, with no significant dose effect. After being immersed in water, the IL and drug-impregnated liners gained weight, while the control group remained unchanged.
Conclusions: Ionic liquid incorporated liners met the standard criteria to be used as long-term liners, in terms of material compliance. However, further studies including dynamic viscoelastic properties and cytotoxicity are needed before clinical trial or application
