KAP Study of mothers regarding oral health status of their children aged 1-12 years
Objectives: To assess knowledge, attitude and practices of mothers regarding oral health of their children in urban areas of Peshawar city. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted using an online Google form February-May 2020 in Peshawar. Sample size was 220 with pilot study conducted on 10 % of the sample. Structured questionnaire with open and closed ended questions was made available online for 3 weeks. Study population included volunteer mothers with at least one child between ages 1-12 years. Data was analyzed using Microsoft excel 2016. Results: 84% of the mothers considered tooth brushing to be the best option for preventing dental caries but 175(87.5%) did not have knowledge about fluoride tooth paste. 130(65%) of the mothers considered miswak to be the most effective cleaning device, 148(74%) said that sugar causes dental caries while only 6(3%) reported it due to improper oral hygiene.88.5% mothers were of the view that milk teeth should be treated if they have any problem. Mass media 121(60.5%) was an important source of information about oral health. Mothers had positive attitude toward oral health of their children, however 76% mothers disagreed with brushing before bed time and regular dental checkup. 102(51%) mothers reported that switching from bottle to sippy cup does not affect oral hygiene. Majority 125(62.5%) of mothers brush their children teeth everyday but occasionally check their children teeth after brushing. 101(50.5%) gave fresh fruits every day to their child. 153(76.5%) gave juices less frequently while 138(69%) did not give plain water after feeding the child, 191(95.5%) used pacifier dipped in sweet liquid. Conclusions: In this study, the mothers showed poor knowledge and their attitude and practices regarding oral health status of their children was also not satisfactory. In addition, we identified television to be a good source of oral health education for mothers
