Association of Osteoporosis to hystero-salpingo-oophorectomy as an etiological catalyst in tooth loss & Periodontitis predominantly in female populace.
Objectives: The purpose of this presentation is to identify & co relate the association between oral health & estrogen deficiency especially in adolescent female population, exhibiting post menopausal characteristics which are attributed to a malpractice during child birth, that encompasses the removal of the ovaries along with uterus i.e hystero-salpingo-oophorectomy rather than just hysterectomy, citing it as a required preventive procedure. Methods: For this presentation, articles from various Scientific Journals with relevant literature & research were reviewed. Results: Sources show a positive association between Osteoporosis principally in the female populace and oophorectomy induced pre-menopausal state, which in turn adversely affects the dentition; rendering teeth fragile & porous and at an increased incidence of acquiring Periodontitis and other oral problems among which include a consequent & gradual tooth loss as result of hormonal fluctuations. Conclusions: By reviewing the provided data, it is clearly indicated that there is a greater propensity to lose alveolar bone in subjects with oophorectomy induced osteoporosis. This would indicate that osteoporosis should be considered a risk factor for periodontal disease progression. A gynecologist should be aware of oral changes happening as a result of oophorectomy, & dental needs of these women & should educate them & only perform such a procedure when it is pertinent & refer them to the dental specialists accordingly. On the other hand, a dentist should also be sensitized about the hormonal status of a woman, her oral status and special preventive and treatment needs.
