Knowledge and Practices of Patients regarding Antibiotics used for Dental Problems
Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the level of common knowledge and practices concerning usage of antibiotics among dental patients Methods: A descriptive questionnaire-based survey was done consisting of fifteen questions at the Institute of Dentistry, CMH Lahore Medical College. Results: Sample for this survey was 500 dental patients, with 48% males and 52% females. Majority (75%) of the sample thought antibiotics had an analgesic effect and 41% reported use of antibiotics prescribed by pharmacists at some point in their lives. Thirty eight percent thought that antibiotics should be used before going for any professional dental work. Self-medication was reported by 42% while 43% discontinued antibiotics on feeling better. Conclusions: Despite some basic knowledge about antibiotic resistance and side effects, misconception existed that antibiotics have antiviral and analgesic effects, leading to alarmingly high rates of non-compliance and self-medication of antibiotics.
