Difference of pain, pre and post pulpectomy, using intra-canal medicaments.
Objectives: To compare different intra-canal medicament for canal disinfection using 30% p-Chlorophenol solution (Endoseptone), Calcium Hydroxide with normal saline & Dry Cotton pellet in terms of mean pain score.
Methods: In this clinical trial study, 105 patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis were selected and randomly divided into three groups, 35 in each. Hand files were used for preparing the canals and 30% p-Chlorophenol solution (Endoseptone), Calcium Hydroxide with normal saline & Dry Cotton pellet were used for intra-canal medicaments for the canals in each group respectively. Questionnaires were given to the patients, asking for the level of their pain. The patients were followed for 24 hours .The data were statistically analyzed.
Results: In this study, significant difference was found in reduction of pain in two out of three groups. In the control group, patients faced mild to moderate pain in 24 hours after pulpectomy and debridement. Thus, it is declared that intra-canal medicaments are necessary for disinfection of root canals to reduce intra-appointment pain.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, significant difference was found in reduction of pain in 30% p-Chlorophenol solution (Endoseptone) & Calcium Hydroxide with normal saline than Dry Cotton pellet.
The hypothesis that the incidence of postoperative pain after endodontic treatment will be reduced by the mixture of 30% p-Chlorophenol solution and calcium hydroxide as intracanal medicament can be accepted.
