Comparative Evaluation of Zinc Oxide and Titanium dioxide modified Resin Coat Restorative Materials

Objectives: Aim: The aim of this study is to synthesize and characterize newly modified EQUIA COAT (GC Corp, Japan) by incorporating zinc oxide and titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles to enhance physicomechanical and thermal properties of resin coat.
Methods: Commercial EQUIA COAT was modified with incorporation of different concentrations (1% and 2% wt/wt) of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles and conventional EQUIA COAT was used as a control group. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and micro-hardness were used for structural, phase, thermal, morphological, and mechanical analysis, respectively. To evaluate weight loss, polymerized samples were investigated at 1,7 and 21 days by immersion in de-ionized water at 37°C. One –Way ANOVA and POST HOC LSD test was used to compare the mean difference between groups.
Results: FTIR spectra showed characteristic stretching peak of methylene=CH2 at 2921.8cm-1. Free (C=O) carbonyl stretching peak at 1717.02 cm-1, asymmetric stretching of C—C in UDMA was shown at 1606.72 cm-1. 1522.03 cm-1 correspond to N-H deformation stretching in UDMA. At 1457.70 cm-1 C-H scissoring vibrations in all constituent monomers were observed. XRD showed diffraction peak of TiO2 at 25.48° and ZnO peaks appeared at 31.84°, 34.52°, 36°, 47°, 56°, 62°, and 68°. SEM results showed random distribution of reinforcing agents. For hardness, TiO2 2% was 47.76 which was highest and least value (29.58) was observed with TiO2 1%. Water absorption values were also improved in modified groups as compared to control group and were significant at day 21, however, insignificant at day1 and 7 for all groups. Thermal stability was also improved in newly modified materials as compared to control group.
Conclusions: The newly developed nanoparticles reinforced EQUIA COAT showed promising results and it has the potential to be used clinically, however further investigations are required.
