Awareness Of Informed Consent In Dental Patients In Lahore

Objectives: The main aims of this study were to assess the:
1. Knowledge of dental patients visiting private dental hospitals of Lahore regarding informed consent.
2. Extent to which it is provided to such patients by the dentists of the respective hospitals.
Methods: A cross sectional survey study was conducted to investigate the use of patients’ informed consent and the extent to which it is provided in private hospitals in Lahore. A questionnaire was used to collect data from patients in private hospitals residing in Lahore from September to October 2018, which included questions on various aspects of informed consent.
Results: The expected results were:
1.Oral consent taken: 81%
2.Written consent taken: 19%
3. Patients satisfied with consent: 78%
4. Patients unsatisfied with consent: 22%
Conclusions: This research was conducted to make patients aware of their rights to obtain informed consent before dental care is provided to them. It should mandatory for all health care practitioners to obtain informed consent from their patients prior to every procedure. A written and signed informed consent in the only evidence that can save a practitioner frequent visits to the courtroom and large sum of money in legal fees in case of a mishap. The consent should also be provided in detail so as to satisfy the patient and to lessen the chances of any post treatment problems.
