IADR Abstract Archives

Analysis of cytotoxic effects of panormic radiography on buccal mucosa.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the hazards of panoramic radiograph on the buccal epithelial cells.
Methods: This study was carried out in radiology department of CMH, Lahore. In this study, 74 patients of both gender, were taken who came for panoramic radiograph. The buccal epithelial cells were collected before radiation exposure and 10 days after radiation by scrapping the both cheeks with wooden spatula. The cells were stained with Giemsa, frequency of micronuclei was observed by scoring 500 cells on a slide. The statistical analysis was done by paired t-test to find the difference between frequency of micronuclei before and after radiation exposure.
Results: Micronuclei cells percentage before radiation exposure was 0.11% and 0.57% after radiation exposure.
Conclusions: This study showed genotoxccity of cells with panoramic radiation exposure.
