Gender And Education; Determinants Of Health Locus Of Control

Objectives: To access the impact of Education and Gender on one's percieved health locus of control.
Methods: A self-administered questionnaire consisting of 12 questions covering all 3 domains of HLOC i.e Internal, External, Powerful others was used. A dicotomous scale was used to carry out survey, it was a randomized sampling survey carried on population of Lahore with sample size of 100 individuals between ages of 35-44. Statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS verion 20. Sample consisted of 63 males and 37 females, of them 30% were illiterate, 20% had secondary school certificate, 24% higher secondary school certificate, 14% graduate and 12% had post graduate degree.
Results: Out of total individuals surveyed, 70% had 'Internal hloc', 20% of the people were falling in 'Powerful others' and only 10% had 'External hloc'. Results showed that educated people were falling in 'Internal hloc' and with decreasing level of education and illiteracy there is shift in behaviour towards 'Exteranl domain' and 'Powerful others'. Males were more internally oriented(50%) than Females(20%). Results showed that there is significant relationship in education and one's belief about their well-being, which means that uneducated people relies more on external factors as fate and on powerful others such as medical practitioners and educated individuals keep themselves responsible for their well-being.
Conclusions: Research showed that Gender has little influence on one's health locus of control whereas Education plays the key role. According to survey, Internal hloc is more related to increasing level of education and illiterates are more dependant on External factors and Powerful others which suggests the need for professional intervention through educational programmes among illiterate population of Lahore.
