USE OF PAN, SUPARI, CHALIA, GUTKA AND OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS AMONG POPULATION OF DIFFERENT SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AT NORTH NAZIMABAD
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide an insight to the extent of use of tobacco & it's associated products and discuss strategies in organizing an approach in cessation of these habits. Methods: Data was collected on the basis of a questionnaire.The questionnaires were filled by the examiners only. Questionnaire included questions regarding education, ethnicity, use or any history of habits, reasons for habits and awareness regarding the consequences of these habits in the participants. Low SES participants were defined as shoppers at discount / Bachaat bazaar situated at North Nazimabad while High SES participants were defined as shoppers at Dolmen mall, North Nazimabad Results: Total participants in this study were215, out of which there were total 107 participants from High SES and 108 participants were from low SES.. Most common habit observed was Chalia (betel nut) 18%. Majority of the participants were using the mentioned habits once daily (7.5%). Participants were most commonly using these habits for more then twenty years. Most common reason given for the continued use of the habit was for taste as well as pleasure also which had the same percentage (8.8%) Second most common reason given for the habit was for Craving (7.4%) and the third most common reason given for the habit was custom (2.8%). 66% participants were aware about the negative consequences of tobacco and betel nut and its associated products while only 34% of the participants were not aware about them.
Conclusions: Use of Tobacco & its associated product is increasing at a alarming rate in our country. By finding the reason for using these habits we can wrok on tobacco cesation techniques specifically targeting taste & craving.
