BRAIN DRAIN: Intentions and Its Associated Factors Among Medical Professionals, A Questionnaire Based Survey at HAMDARD UNIVERSITY DENTAL HOSPITAL, Karachi.

Objectives: To investigate the intention behind doctors for emigration and factors behinds of this brain drain for Pakistan.
Methods: Study Design: Cross-Sectional questionnaire based survey. Settings: Hamdard University Dental Hospital, Karachi. Material & Method: One hundred and Two participants are included who completely answered questionnaire surveys that were distributed to them. Informed consent was taken. In this study participants included in the study was Students, House Officers, Junior Medical Officers, Post Graduate Trainees and Faculty. All questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS version 16. Descriptive statistics were applied. CHI SQUARE TEST was used at P value <0.05 which was considered as statistically significant.
Results: Results: Out of 102 study participants, 33.3% were house officers, 31.4% were postgraduate trainees ,17.6% were students and 17.6% were faculty. Chi square analysis test was done to find association between want to go abroad and reasons for migration at (p>0.05). We find out that factors Political Reasons or Security Reasons Racial Tension and Post-graduation shows association and their p-value (p>0.05) shows significant results
Conclusions: Conclusion: The highly rated reasons for dissatisfaction of the participants to work in the home country were low expected salary, Better way of life, Political and security issues and stressful working conditions. The government need to take important steps to attract these settled abroad talents of Pakistani who are now equipped with sophisticated technology learned in western countries and can also provide huge amount of foreign exchange needed for the foundation Pakistan’s economy into a knowledge based economy driven by technology and innovation.
