DENTAL IMPLANTS: TITANIUM OR ZIRCONIA

Objectives: Comparison of various properties of titanium and zirconia based dental implants.
Methods: Literature was searched to gather information regarding zirconia based dental implants and studies were critically analyzed. PubMed database was the main source of information about zirconia dental implants and their mechanical properties, osseointegration, surface roughness and biocompatibility. The literature search was limited to English language articles published from 2005 to 2015.
Results: Zirconia and titanium both are of equal importance as titanium possesses good strength but aesthetically zirconia is preferable and can be incorporated in multi-rooted teeth as multi-rooted implants.
Conclusions: Literature search revealed that some of the characteristics of zirconia are appropriate for making it an ideal dental implant, such as biocompatibility, osseointegration, satisfactory soft tissue response and aesthetics due to transmission of light and its color however at the same time, some studies also point out its drawbacks. It was observed that majority of the studies on zirconia dental implants were short-term hence require long-term clinical trials to justify that zirconia is worth enough to replace titanium as a biomaterial in dental implantology.
