Management of Endodontic Patients with severe Gag Relex using Glossopharyngeal nerve Block Technique - a Case Report.

Objectives: The objective of this case report is to manage endodontic patients with severe gag reflex by glossopharyngeal nerve block technique.
Methods: In this case report, to overcome the difficulty of gag reflex that is encountered during several dental and endodontic procedures, a glossopharyngeal nerve block technique is used by the dental practioner to execute the endodontic and other dental procedures more comfortably, producing an excellent and a qualitative dental treatment.
Results: Response to gag reflex decreases after successful glossopharyngeal nerve block technique, thereby performing the endodontic procedure with a higher comfort zone and patient satisfaction, providing a splendid dental treatment.
Conclusions: The glossopharyngeal nerve block technique causes temporary abolition of the gag reflex and loss of tactile sensation over the posterior third of the tongue and the lateral and posterior walls of the oropharynx. This is relatively, safe, simple and easy to master technique as compare with general anesthesia for treating a patient with an exaggerated gag reflex. This technique can be really helpful in endodontic and other relevant dental procedures in patients with an exagerrated gag reflex or when performing procedures in the posterior aspect of the mouth.
