Cross sectional analysis of tooth extraction at Liaquat University Hospital dental OPD

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the pattern, causes and reasons of tooth extraction among patients presenting at Dental Out Patient Department, Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro.
Methods: This cross sectional observational analysis was conducted on 130 patients, presented, Dental Out Patient Department, Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro, for tooth extraction. Participants were chosen via convenience sampling and approached after taking informed consent. A structured questionnaire was used as data tool. Queries were asked about name, age, gender, socio-economic and educational status, morbidity factor leading to extraction of tooth, number of teeth extracted, choice of teeth extraction and satisfaction level of patients. The study completed in 7 months i.e. from December, 2014 to July, 2015. Data obtained, were analyzed on SPSS v. 19.0.
Results: The sample consisted of 44% of males & 56% of females with a mean age of 38.93 + 12.54. Majority (i.e. half) of patients were uneducated. Caries was found to be the leading factor towards tooth extraction in most of patients i.e. 57.69% (n=75), followed by periodontal diseases i.e. 16.15% (n=21). Around 87% of patients were having single tooth extraction and 60.8% of the total sample stated that they never had tooth extraction before. It was found out that the patients themselves opt for tooth extraction in majority (i.e. 60%) of cases
Conclusions: This study stated the leading cause of tooth extraction is caries which occurs in the end of 4th decade of life. Proper steps should be taken to prevent this disease to grow further and leading to tooth extraction
