DEVELOPMENT OF A CONTEMPORARY AND EVIDENCE-BASED DENTAL CURRICULUM AT A DENTAL SCHOOL IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Objectives: Peninsula Dental School is one of the first schools based in community settings in the United Kingdom. Established in 2007, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) Course has a highly innovative, problem-based, student-led, patient-cantered curriculum and in 2015 Peninsula was ranked as the top dental school in England in the Guardian University league table. This presentation will discuss the development and implementation of an innovative dental curriculum underpinned by contemporary trends in dental education including community-based settings; a problem-based curriculum with a modular design; horizontal and vertical integration of basic and clinical disciplines in a spiralling manner; a holistic training model both in simulated dental learning environments as well as clinical settings; use of pioneering assessment methods such as Dental Progress Testing, Integrated Structured Clinical Examinations (ISCE) and formative / summative assessment of communication skills, professionalism, leadership and research skills. This talk will inform the dental educators in Pakistan and further afield to reflect on their existing dental curricula and debate future changes.
