A Simple, Non Invasive and Effective Method of Tooth Brushing: Mumtaz Technique
Objectives: There is a need to develop a guideline on the most appropriate tooth brushing method and no effective mathod for all age groups is documented till date. To fill this gap this technique of tooth brushing (Mumtaz technique) is introduced and evaluated through a multi centered randomized controll trial on the basis of bleeding on probing (BOP). Methods: Guidelines for this technique were holding the brush at right angle at the junction of gums and teeth. Followed by application of slight pressure to the bristles to reach the inaccessible areas and then drawing the brush towards the occlusal side to remove debris and plaque. This technique is recommended for all the surfaces of teeth for three times in one sitting. Video links were also provided to the patients for further guidence. Evaluation of the technique was performed in three dental clinics on 400 patients of different age groups with moderate periodontal involvement through bleeding on probing since January 2012 to June 2015. Results: Out of 400 patients 59 showed bleeding from the gums which is 14.8% of total specimens and not a significant observation. Remaining patients reported and evaluated for complete stoppage of bleeding from the gums. Paired sample T test provided a highly significant value of 0.00 well below the p value 0.05 for the test statistics which is highly supportive for this research. Through test statistics null hypothesis was rejected successfully. Conclusions: Within limitations of this study Mumtaz technique can serve as a better and effective tooth cleaning pattern required for oral prophylaxis measures.
