Acceptance of HPV Vaccine Among Males in Africa- an Approach to Combat HPV Associated Cancer: a Systematic Review
Objectives: Women are usually the focus in most research on HPV vaccine acceptance because of the strong association between HPV and cervical cancer. However, acceptance by men especially in the African community is an important factor for effective vaccination campaign. There is also a concerning increase in non-cervical HPV associated cancer especially in men. This systematic review aims to assess the acceptance of HPV vaccine among males in Africa. Methods: According to the PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a search for studies on PUBMED, ScienceDirect and MEDLINE between January 1, 2012 and September 30, 2023. We included cross sectional studies presented in English that assessed the acceptance of HPV vaccine in Africa. Data on the acceptance of HPV vaccine among males in Africa were extracted. Studies done among all age groups were included. Results: Five studies involving 726 participants met the eligibility criteria. The studies were done in five Africa countries. The knowledge and practice of most of the participants on HPV vaccination were low but acceptance rate measured by willingness to get HPV vaccine for daughter is high ranging from 90% to 96.4%. The odds of getting vaccinated is significantly low when compare to the female group. Despite the high acceptance rate, vaccination uptake is still low and major contributing factors are ignorance of availability of the vaccine in Nigeria and its high cost. Conclusions: This review highlights the promising trend of high vaccine acceptance among males in Africa. However, efforts to bridge the existing gender gap are essential. Also, identified factors for low vaccination despite high acceptance rate should by address by public health experts.
