KNOWLEDGE of BASIC LIFE SUPPORT and EMERGENCY
MEDICAL CARE AMONG DENTAL STUDENTS in LAGOS,
NIGERIA.
Objectives: This study aims to determine knowledge of and attitude towards Basic Life Support and confidence levels in attending to medical emergencies among dental students in Lagos State, Nigeria. Methods: This research is a descriptive, cross- sectional study carried out among 500 and 600 level dental students at the Colleges of Medicine in Lagos, Nigeria. Data was collected via a self-administered questionnaire Results: A total of 88 respondents participated in the study with a mean age of 24+ 1.67. This study revealed that 51% of respondents had average knowledge on BLS, while 49% had good knowledge, none of the respondents had poor knowledge of BLS and emergency medical care. 99% of participants in this study had positive attitude towards the learning and practice of BLS & EMC, however, this doesn’t translate to their ability to practice BLS when there’s a need for it as a self-assessment grading by respondents showed that 85% had low confidence in their ability to practice BLS and attend to common medical emergencies. Associations between socio-demographic variables and knowledge of BLS showed no statistical significance (p>0.05). Conclusions: The study showed that there is finding dearth of knowledge in BLS and low confidence levels in practicing BLS and EMS among clinical dental students in Lagos. However, there is an obvious willingness to learn. Hence, it is important that the undergraduate curriculum is adjusted to accommodate adequate training in BLS.
