PATIENTS’ PERCEPTION on RECEIVING PROFESSIONAL DENTAL SERVICES at GOVERNMENT HEALTH INSTITUTIONS in LAGOS DURING the COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Objectives: - To assess the perception of dental patients on susceptibility to contracting COVID-19 from the dental clinic;
- To determine the related beliefs and attitudes of dental patients regarding dental visits during the COVID-19 pandemic;
- To assess the considerations for the return of dental patients to the clinic after the pandemic.
Methods: A multi-institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 303 dental patients using a self-administered questionnaire consisting of knowledge on the prevention and spread of COVID-19 disease, COVID-19 risk perception in a dental clinic, and patients’ satisfaction on the quality of care received at the dental clinic. Descriptive and analytical statistics were used to identify the factors associated with their knowledge of COVID-19 risk perception, and satisfaction. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistical significance.
Results: A total of 303 dental patients participated in this study. The mean age of the respondents was 32.40±11.49 years, with 89.4% having a good knowledge of the spread and prevention of COVID-19 disease. Of the respondents who attended the dental clinic during the COVID-19
pandemic, 64.4% had a high perception of the risk of contracting COVID-19 disease in the dental clinic. Tooth pain was the most common reason for presenting to the dental clinic, accounting for 58.5% of respondents. Age was found to be significantly associated with COVID-
19 risk perception, with the elderly and young adults reporting higher COVID-19 risk perception. A majority (70%) of the respondents who presented at the dental clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic had good satisfaction remarks to the treatment they received, while only
5% of these respondents had poor satisfaction remarks, with a quarter of the respondents having average satisfaction remarks. A majority (70%) of the respondents who presented to the dental clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic observed “GOOD” clinic preparedness against COVID-19 remarks at the dental clinic.
Conclusions: Dental clinics in government health institutions in Lagos State need to work more on developing and implementing better disease prevention protocols to mitigate the risk of disease transmission in the setting, and also allaying worries and fostering trust in the security of dental facilities.
