Development of Clinical/Practical Skill Through Internet Media

Objective: There could be no dental practice without dental education. This study will examine the ICT roles in education and dental practice especially as it impacted on skill development, continuous professional development (CPD) and course delivery strategies. However not much work has been done in teaching technical subjects via Internet technology media. The use of various Internet tools for learner to develop technical techniques has given rise to varying application of these tools and to that extent educators are left with some degrees of skepticism as the traditionalist most acceptable approach has been that the teacher should be right there with the learner and until then learning has not been generally accepted as having taken place. The trend in teaching and learning today continue to decline emphasis on the need to have the teacher and learner to be physically present in a classroom before knowledge and skills could be acquired.

Methods: I will explore various possibilities in this area and how it impacted on curriculum design, instructional strategies, pedagogical approaches and learning theories etc. There will be two distinct considerations: Online and Offline course delivery methodologies and their impact variously on the pedagogical approaches.

Information and communication technology tools like Podcast, wiki, e-mobile, Blogs, LMS, CMS, text based asynchronous and synchronous discussion and their application in realizing educational objectives.

Results: Online universities are now springing up with course offerings in diverse areas of human endeavour. Increased interest and successes in developing practical oriented skills via internet media among others

Conclusion: There is growing awareness and uses of technology in and of education and this dissertation will elicit interest in this area especially as it impacted on the use of video and audio facilities in accomplishing practical skill.
