Pattern of Teething Complaints

Objective: The study was aimed at determining the pattern of teething complaints in infants during the eruption of first set of deciduous teeth and establish any relationship.

Material and Method: A cross sectional study design of children aged 6-36 months were studied in 14 wards of Jos North Local Government Area. A multistage sampling technique was adopted in selecting 1081 mothers who consented and were interviewed using structured interviewer administered questionnaire on their knowledge and perception on common complaints during teething in children. The index children were examined for number and type of teeth erupted using mouth mirror under natural light by the authors.

RESULT: The number of children that experienced the various teething complaints during the eruption of their first set of teeth followed a common pattern though at a varying degree. The number of children in each of the complaint commenced and increased from 4 – 5 months to 6 – 7 month then decreased sharply to 8 – 9 month and thereafter decreased steadily to 12 months plus.

CONCLUSION: This study draws attention to the relatively poor anecdotal evidence related to symptoms associated with teething process. This study was able to establish some association between the timing of symptoms and teething process. There is the need for further indebt research to buttress the findings of this study. It is pathetic that management of teething is tailored on the path of myth rather than identified disease condition.
