The Burden of a classification system for maxillectomies

Objectives: The term “maxillectomy” is used to describe a variety of surgical procedures for a spectrum of conditions involving diverse anatomic sites. The classification of maxillectomy has however been diverse often making communication difficult. This article is to highlight this problem and emphasize the need for a uniform system of classification.

Methods: An electronic search using the PUBMED was carried out to retrieve all the available materials dealing with classification of maxillectomy. Materials were also sourced outside the internet.

Result: A total of 11 articles written by Maxillofacial Surgeons and Prosthodontists were used and their classifications of maxillary defects were reviewed.

Conclusion: A lot of confusion does exist among practitioners involved in the surgical management of disease in the midfacial region area. It is suggested that a simple, immediately discernable and all encompassing classification be adopted to enhance communication and patient care.
