Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma: a case report and review of literature

Objective: Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare lesion which exhibits considerable histologic variability and an unpredictable clinical course. It accounts for less than 3% of reported cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We hereby report a case with a protracted clinical course and metastatic lesion involving the tongue.

Method: Clinic record and patient's case note were analyzed.

Result: A 35 years old lady who presented with bilateral swelling involving the symphysis and the body of the mandible histologically diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma. She had mandibular resection with iliac crest (non vascularised) bone graft reconstruction. She later presented with a massive tongue swelling which was also diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma after after a debulking surgery.

Conclusion: A case of central mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the mandible with an unusual clinical behaviour was presented highlighting the difficulty in management of such cases.
