OBJECTIVE: Incidence and pattern of presentation of common oral health problems.
Material & Methods: The study was a retrospective review of records of 1623 patients who attended the primary oral health centre Idikan Ibadan between the year 2000 and 2004. Information from each record was extracted on a pro-forma, which was later entered into a computer and analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).
RESULTS: The results highlights attendance of male 734 (45.2%) and female 865 (5.3%) 24 (1.5%) are missing & ranks high periodontal diseases (31.7%), chronic marginal gingivitis (16.9%); dental caries (15.0%). In 22.2% of cases the oral hygene was poor; and fair in 37.9%. In the rest of the record the doctors almost always put minimal/moderate accumulation of plague and calculation.
CONCLUSION: The study confirms the findings in other settings about the high periodontal and carries incidence/status in Nigeria. The programme in the centre may need to be reviewed to bring down these conditions.
