Bolton's analysis and its applicability to Nigerian tooth sizes

Objective: To compare tooth size ratios in a Nigerian sample with Class I normal Occlusion and that of Bolton's Study. To compare tooth size ratios among gender and to compare Boltons prediction tables for tooth sizes ratio with that of Nigerians.

Materials and Methods: Dental casts of 250 subjects with age ranging from 13 – 15 years were used for this study. All subjects had normal Class I with no previous history of Orthodontic treatment.

Results: Statistical Analysis using the student's test was used to compare tooth-size ratios between this present study and that of Bolton's.The result indicated that there were no statistical significant differences between the mean values of the anterior ratio and overall ratio of the present study and the mean values reported by Bolton.

Conclusion: it is suggested that Bolton's prediction tables can also be used for Nigerians.
