Primary Non-Hodgkin’S Lymphoma of the Jaws in Children

OBJECTIVE: The non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) constitute a heterogenous group of neoplastic proliferation of lymphoid cells that usually disseminate throughout the body. Burkitt’s lymphoma is a distinct variant of NHL, more commonly seen in African children especially in malaria endemic regions. NHL with the exception of the Burkitt’s type, usually present in older adults. Its manifestation in bone as a primary lesion is a rarity. This is even more so when it occurs in children.

METHOD: Retrospective analysis of cases seen between the year 2000 and 2003.

RESULT: Of the 16 cases of NHL diagnosed in our department during the study period, only one case involved an adult. There was an almost equal incidence of the Burkitt’s lymphoma variant and the other non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma type, the ratio being 9:7. For the latter group, their ages ranged from 14 months to 13 years and they all presented with tumefaction of the maxilla or mandible as the presenting complaint. The exception was the only adult in the series. The clinical, radiological and pathological findings are presented with a review of the literature.

CONCLUSION: There appears to be an emerging trend where more paediatric cases of the other NHL type involving the jaws are being seen.
