Periodontal Therapy in the Female Patient

OBJECTIVE: To assess the implications of hormonal influences on periodontal therapy in the female patient.

METHOD: Literature review using Pubmed and other sources

RESULT: Throughout a women's life cycle, hormonal influences affect therapeutic decision making in periodontics. However, the advent of new research has provided keener appreciation of the unique systemic influences on oral, periodontal, and implant tissues. Oral health care professionals have greater awareness and capabilities of dealing with hormonal influences associated with the reproductive process.

CONCLUSION: Adequate cognisance should be taken of gender differences in the management of periodontal patients.
