Oral Health Care Service Behind Bars

OBJECTIVE: The study was aimed at documenting oral health care services in Jos Prison. METHOD: A face to face interview was used to collect information on oral health service in the prison from the Deputy Controller, the Medical Officer in charge and 111 male inmates of the prison. RESULT: About half 56(51%) of the inmates were aged between 20 -30 years while 94(85%) were literate. Most 85(77%) of the inmates had spent up to five years in prison. During their incarceration, 21(19%) of the 111inmates had ever visited the Dentist; out of which 13(61.9%), 4(19%), 4(19%) had visited the Dentist once, twice and more than twice respectively. Perceived oral health needs showed that 53% had needs related to dental caries and its sequelae. More than half (55%) with perceived oral health needs claimed that nothing was done to alleviate their problems even after their complaints, 18% were referred to the dental clinic while 27% were treated in the prison clinic. There was a statistically significant association between the duration of imprisonment, the literacy level and oral health needs of the inmates (p<0.05). The study revealed that there were no oral health personnel among the health officials, neither was there any oral health programme for the prisoners. CONCLUSION: Oral health care service is lacking in Jos Prison as evidenced by the considerable pending oral health needs in the prison population. Oral Health services should be incorporated into the health care services in Nigeria prisons.
