OBJECTIVES: 1.To enumurate types of cancer. 2.Problems of management in our centre. 3.Offer solutions that would help management and prevention.
METHOD: In this study, 280 cases of Oro-facial carcinoma were analysised using age, sex, site, date of onset, tribe, date reported in the clinic, previous treatment, occupation, social activities, stage of disease, treatment and prognosis.
RESULTS: The results obtained showed that 60.7% were males, 39.3% females.Age at presentation ranges from 11 - 91 years.Peak age is 51 - 60years, prevelance is 1.5 to 2%.Squamous cell carcinoma accounted for 57.1%,Adenocystic Carcinoma 19.6%, Metastatic 9.3%, Mucoepidermold 4.3%, Adenocarcinoma 5%, Verucous Carcinoma 2.1%,Basal cell 1.1%, poorly differenciated 1.4%.Site of occurence includes Mandible 32,Floor of mouth 28, Oroantral 25, Palate 23, Maxilla 22,Face 22, Neck 16, Cheek 10, Tongue 10, Lower lip 9,Orbit 13, Parotid 9, Nose 7, Others 8. Late presentation affect management as it (a)makes it difficult to pinpoint site of origin (b) affects prognosis of lesion. 80% of the lesions present at very advanced stage.Treatment was mainly surgical for early cases seen, chemotherapy and Radiotherapy for advanced cases.Prognosis fair for early presentation.Prognosis for advanced stage difficult to determine as many did not return for review.
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, early detection of Carcinoma requires training more dental surgeons as well as establishing more Maxillo-Facial centres where the cases diagnosed can be managed.
