An un-usual age and site of Oral Mucocele, and Literature review
Objectives: objectives were: 1. To present a case of an infant have bilateral mucoceles, and describe their clinical characteristics, etiology, site of occurrence, and treatment given. 2. Review of literature among young children Methods: Infant reported the Department of pediatric dentistry, Benghazi Dental School, Benghazi University 2013. A full report of the case included the clinical data like D.O.B, full medical, dental, and social histories, probable etiology, and parent and infant compliant, location of mucoceles, and treatment given, was compared to the literatures. Results: A rare case of bilateral mucoceles in a 40 -day-old, Libyan male was reported. Mucoceles were placed at the margins of the lower ridges lingually at the future sites of primary molars area . As a 44% of mucoceles in children spontaneously resolved after an average period of three to five months, both mucoceles were resolved spontaneously over a period of 3- 5 months. We concluded from the Literature of the lesion that it occurs most commonly in the lower lip with chronic trauma being the most common etiology. As various treatment modalities were available for the management of this lesion, like surgical excision, marsupialization, Laser ablation, cryosurgery, and electrocautery with variable success , our approach was successful in this very young case Conclusions: Mucocele is a common oral mucosal lesion, but it is rarely observed in the infant. Mucoceles and ranulas may spontaneously resolve, especially in infants and young children. In a recent retrospective study, approximately 44% of mucoceles in children spontaneously resolved after an average of 3 months.
If symptoms are minimal in this young age group, aspiration of the lesions and periodic follow-up for 6 months have been suggested as an alternative to surgery
