Basosquamous cell carcinoma - a case report and literature review

Objectives: Basosquamous carcinoma is a rare cutaneous tumor considered by some authors as an aggressive type of basal cell carcinoma having a propensity for local recurrence and a potential risk for regional and distant metastatic spread
Methods: We present a rare case of a 76 years-old patient presented with an ulcerative lesion which is slowly growing and painless localized to right midfacial region, that had an ongoing development for over three years. Physical examination with regional lymph nodes, photo documentation and biopsy of the ulcer were carried out.
Results: Histopathological examination was consistent with basosquamous cell carcinoma. The patient was then referred to surgery for surgical treatment and further evaluation.
Conclusions: Basosquamous carcinoma is a rare epithelial tumor, locally aggressive and invasive type with risk of recurrences and distant metastases. It is therefore mandatory to critically evaluate this tumor microscopically. This need appropriate surgical excision with negative margin and long term follow-up is essential, due to higher recurrence rate and increased risk of metastases.
