A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF SMILE AESTHETICS IN SELF-LIGATING VS. CONVENTIONAL ORTHODONTICS

Objectives: Compare the buccal corridor, in the pre- and post-treatment photographs between self-ligating orthodontic and conventional orthodontic patients
Methods: Fifty patients of both sexes with permanent dentition, maxillary compression, crowding greater than 7mm and basal proportions in the anteroposterior direction were evaluated.
25 patients were treated with self-ligating orthodontics, BTM system, without performing extractions, and 25 with conventional orthodontics (Roth) with premolar extraction.
The standardized photographs were taken with a Canon 5D camera, a 100mm macro lens and a macro twin flash. In the calibrated photographs, the areas covered by the right and left buccal corridor were compared with the Inkscape program.

Routine diagnostic photographs were analyzed at the beginning and end of treatment. The modifications produced in the aesthetics of the smile were evaluated in the photographs of the forehead with the smile before and after treatment. Mean, SD and unpaired Student's T test were calculated.
Results: In the photographic image, the buccal corridors varied 1.94 mm2 + 1.93 on average in the Self-ligating group and 0.15 mm2 + 1.66 on average in the conventional group (p <0.05), with a statistically significant difference between the images pre- and post-treatment.
Conclusions: Premolar extractions to treat crowding increased the buccal corridors, while the recovery of the natural dental arch, with self-ligating orthodontics, reduces or maintains them without damaging the aesthetics of the smile.
