Architecture and sleep quality after using a snoring control device

Objectives: To compare the architecture and sleep quality before and after placement of a mandibular advancement device (MAD) used for snoring control.
Methods: This descriptive study considered an intention sample of 12 snorers identified by self-report and by result of Roncolab® App. Sleep architecture was identified by polysomnography (PSG) based on: duration of NMOR (without rapid eye movements) and REM (with rapid eye movements) stages, arousals events, oximetry and hearth rate. Sleep quality was determined by Pittsburgh index considering sleep efficiency, duration, latency, disturbance, quality, dysfunction and use of sleep medications, where a score greater than 5 suggests sleep problems. The MAD was made from individual models with progressive mandibular advancement and complete occlusal guidance. The PSG and the Pittsburgh index were applied before (B) and after (A) two months of the use of the MAD. The statistical difference between the variables was determined by means comparison tests: t – student or Wilcoxon.
Results: Mean sleep architecture was (p> 0.05): MOR stage duration (minutes): B: 138.5- A: 128.13, NMOR stage duration(minutes): B: 292.17 - A: 301.46, oximetry (%): B: 91- A: 95, hearth rate (beats / minute): B: 65.00 - A: 66.92. Arousals with snoring events: B: 9.25- A:14.08 registered statistical significance. Pittsburgh sleep quality index was: B: 5.45 - A: 5.57 (p> 0.05).
Conclusions: After using a mandibular advancement device, the architecture of sleep showed an increase in arousal with snoring events and Pittsburgh quality index suggested sleep problems.
