“Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) for initial assessment of periodontal disease in pregnant women in Chile: barriers and facilitators”
Objectives:
The purpose of this study is to recognize current barriers and facilitators for dentists to apply the BPE at primary level of care within public health services nationwide.
Methods: Anonymous and voluntary surveys were designed through a virtual platform for dentists who take care of the pregnant population at primary level in health facilities services in Chile. Whole answers from every willing participant were recorded.
Results: Twenty-nine health services were included. Two hundred dentists from the total effective surveys sent, were answered. A greater response from women was recorded. Surveys show that all the included answers recognize the importance of periodontal evaluation during primary care in pregnant women, and a minority who does not know the EPB or its references in the manual of the health programme for pregnant women. Main difficulties were lack of instruments to perform the EPB or periodontal initial therapy , and short dental appointments. Metropolitan region has the highest use rate of this toool.
Conclusions: It is evident the need to increase the implementation and use of the BPE detection tool in pregnant women, to reinforce information for dentists at primary level and the implementation of instruments for the correct diagnostic and treatment of periodontitis.
